I thought the idea behind the pogo was that it could be carried on merchant ships and deployed out of the range of any friendly aircraft. The harrier still needed some sort of aircraft carrier.
I was watching a documentary on the Falkland Island War and was surprised by the short range of the Harrier. That, and it's a subsonic craft.

Yeah, there were major tradeoffs with the Harrier, most having to do with the weight of all that ductwork to do the VTOL thing. The Pogo would have had a lot of fun launching from a pitching deck, but it might have done okay with small units hidden in woods. Take off, attack, return and hide.
Nothing wrong with the design or the plane, really - but like the Martin P6M, it was an aircraft in search of a mission. My dad was actually on the team at Martin that worked on the P6M back in the day and we had a model of it that the company had done up as a marketing gimmick. The base was blue translucent plastic and set up to show the bird about to lift off the water...
