There are ways to play online. https://www.dndbeyond.com/ Is a good place to start. That's what the DM of my group uses to create and run her campaign, and where the group create and store their characters, and character information. Apparently you can put out applications to join groups, or people can apply to join yours. Not exactly sure how all of it works, but it seems pretty cool.
I've got a LG silver dragonborn paladin of Bahamut. Establishing character quote: "Why, yes, I am well aware I am a walking stereotype, and I will happily remind you that you said so the next time I save your life." His preferred weapon is sword and shield, but he also carries a spear because "Tavern lore says that all paladins carry sticks around. I prefer to carry mine externally."
