You can blame Cincinnatus for the start of the "Farmboys are great heros!" thing. Guy was a roman consul/senator thing in pseudo-exile, and Rome got invaded so they turned to him for help, and he got the army together and beat the crap out of the invaders, and despite being Dictator (that was his actual title) and having all the power he would need to take control (a la Hitler or Palpatine), he resigned and went right back to farming.
