The two overseers held out their rattles and declared, “Level 2!” Once their rattles had transformed – Zemy’s being a blue-bladed katana with a yellow hilt – they charged at each other. Zemy struck first, forcing Jinx to pull back. The chipmunk was used to fighting opponents that were taller than him, so his fighting style consisted of jump slashes, he’d had so much practice that he was able to gain a considerable amount of height each time.
Jinx was on the defensive, avoiding each attack, but smiling the whole time, not feeling pressured just yet. After Zemy landed once again, Jinx jumped away to put some distance between the two of them. Zemy stopped momentarily to catch his breath. “Apparently all of the rumors about the overseer of islands are true. A prodigy that comes around once every 100 years or so, you’re quite formidable” the dingo complimented. Zemy didn’t care, a noticeable breeze seemed to emanate from his body as he increased his spirit energy. Jinx took notice of this and his smile grew wider. “You’re really serious” he said.
The sergeant of Australia, Jake the koala bear came running towards the scene, having heard the explosions from Zelia’s bubble bombs earlier. He noticed his superior staring down the angry gaze of the overseer of islands, and his own confusion was made worse when he noticed Zelia nearby, unconscious. “Sir, I heard explosions, what’s going on?” he said, catching his breath. “Nothing to worry about Jake, I’ll handle this” the dingo assured him. Zemy rushed at Jinx again, they crossed swords so quickly that it was hard to make out what was going on, Jake had never seen two overseer-level youth sprites clash before, it left him in awe.
Jinx was forced to back off again, when he did, he felt that a portion of his right sleeve had been cut during their bout, his smile faded as he realized he’d underestimated Zemy’s capabilities. As Zemy ran towards him, Jinx tore off the dangling part of his torn sleeve and threw it in Zemy’s face. This blinded him momentarily, and as he regained his focus, it was now Jinx that was charging at him, and instead of slashing, he was repeatedly jabbing at the chipmunk. Zemy tried his best to block his opponent’s sword as he was forced to keep backing up. “Well kid, what do you think now?” Jinx asked as he continued his assault, “do you still like your chances?” he added as his grin reappeared on his face.
Zemy jumped up and over Jinx, attempting to slash him from behind in one quick motion, Jinx managed to avoid the attack and took a step back. “Impressive, I’d better not underestimate you, or I may live to regret it” Jinx said. “No, you’re wrong,” Zemy said, finally speaking. “You’re going to regret this right now” the chipmunk said. Jinx and Jake were nearly knocked down as Zemy’s spirit energy spiked again. “You forced me to do this Jinx, and now you’re going to pay for what you did to Zelia!” he shouted. The holes along the blade of his sword glowed and Zemy jumped into the air as he swung his sword. “Take flight, Bubble Dragon!” he declared. A giant western dragon-shaped bubble emanated from the sword, much to everyone else’s surprise. “I’ve heard of this before, but at the academy we were told it’s purely theoretical for a spirit attack to take the form of a living creature, and yet I’m looking at it right now” Jake thought to himself. “So, you can use “living magic”, just when I think I’ve got you all figured out, you show me another trick up your sleeve” Jinx said.
The dragon roared and breathed transparent fire in the direction of Jinx, Jake ran for cover as the flames sought to engulf them both. Jinx waited until the last second and then used quick step to get away. Zemy figured he would, but he’d used the dragon flame to conceal his own movement and was about to stab Jinx as he landed from a jump. Time seemed to slow for them both as Jinx did something Zemy had never seen him do before, he opened his eyes. The colored part of his eyes was a scarlet red and Zemy shivered as he felt their murderous intent. “Go forth, Bubble Lance!” Jinx shouted.
A bubble-shaped lance shot forth from his own sword, and Zemy narrowly avoided being stabbed in the face with it, but the lance kept on going as he landed some distance away. “Really, are you sure you want to dodge it? If you do, she’ll die!” the dingo said. Zemy noticed that the lance was quickly headed towards his unconscious friend. “Zelia, look out!” he shouted, hoping she would hear him.
Something quickly moved in between the tip of the lance and Zelia, diverting the attack. Once the attack was stopped in its tracks, Zemy noticed a familiar face. “Skip? What’re you doing here?” he asked, feeling a mixture of shock and relief. “Forgive me sir,” the squirrel said, still blocking the lance with his rattle. “I was headed to the “nursery” as you ordered, but then, I sensed that you’d summoned a bubble dragon and thought you might need help” he explained. Jinx looked confused, not expecting this turn of events. “Now Overseer Jinx, please put away your sword” Skip pleaded, “if you don’t, then you’ll have both of us as your opponents.”
Jinx chuckled and dispersed the bubble lance, and then reverted his sword to its rattle form. He started to walk away in the direction that Jake ran off in before Zemy stopped him. “I’m not done with you yet!” he shouted. “Instead of coming after me, maybe you should look after the sergeant of Europe” Jinx said, referring to Zelia. Then with that, he quick stepped away and was gone. “What happened here?” Skip asked his superior. “I’ll explain later, we’d better get going, we’ll have to take Zelia with us, it’s fine, she’ll be asleep for a few more hours” Zemy said. They then carried their sleeping comrade to the designated meeting place.
