Nevo and Kyeri approached the hybrid army as it advanced across what was once an open prairie; only now it was just a barren patch of dirt. Nevo’s father Darius was in the lead. Kyeri could make out members of his clan, mixed with Nevo’s clan.
What had happened? Kyeri thought. The answer came from around Darius’ neck. Hanging from is like a fresh kill, was olan’s necklace.
Olan was dead.
“What is going on Father?” Nevo asked. Darius looked between Kyeri and Nevo.
“In order to make sure the humans can’t ever bring destruction to the world they must be eliminated.” His voice turned darker, more sinister then Nevo had ever heard, as he finished speaking: “It was necessary to take control of the grey clan to accomplish this goal.”
With tremendous speed, Darus pulled his sword from his hip; it swiped across Kyeri’s stomach, then dove deep into his chest. Kyeri’s eyes filled with surprise and terror as he felt the hilt of the sword come to a rest on his chest. Darus pulled the sword from Kyeri’s chest. Blood started to flow from the wound. Kyeri stood here still stunned; but, starting to waiver.
Nevo caught Kyeri in his arms as he started to fall. His face filled with horror. As he knelt down with Kyeri, gently lowering him to the ground, Nevo glanced up at his father, his voice an unnatural howl. “Why?” he cried. Darus laughed
“He is the next in line of his clan, I can’t afford for him to live. Did I not teach you anything of strategy.”
“Nevo?” Kyeri whispered, his voice frail.
Nevo looked down at Kyeri and quickly glaced at Devon who had made his way to the group. “I have never seen him this hurt.” Devon stumbled on his words.
“Nevo?” Kyeri whispered again. Nevo looked down again, the blood running from his wound. There was no blue healing light. “Nevo…I…I…” Kyeri took Nevo’s hand. He tried to speak, but the words didn’t come out. Kyeri closed his eyes; winced in pain.
Nevo cradled Kyeri in one arm and held his hand with the other. He watched helplessly as Kyeri’s chest filled up with air; stopped of a moment, then for the last time fell again. Nevo felt Kyeri’s body go limp in his arms. Tears welled up in his eyes as he drew Kyeri closer to him. “NO!” he cried out as he pressed his head against Kyeri’s shoulder.
Kyeri stood in a field lined with trees and tall grass. Above him moon light bathed everything in soft white light. He knew where he was, he had been here many times before. It was the dream, he knew it, the only difference was the moon. Strangely though Kyeri didn’t feel afraid he just stood there waiting.
It didn’t take long, the white light formed in front of Kyeri, taking the familiar form of the white wolf. It stood before Kyeri, it’s yellow eyes ablaze.
After a moment, Kyeri spoke: “Go on, I know why you are here; do it, kill me.”
The white wolf’s lips never moved, but Kyeri could hear his words. “Kyeri, you don’t understand. Even at the end you don’t understand.”
Kyeri continued to stare at the white wolf. “If I don’t understand, then why else are you here, why haunt my dreams all my life!”
“What you don’t realize, is that we are one. I am your power, I am your light. And you are my power and my light. Together we have healed many.”
Kyeri remembered Nevo, he remembered the battle that was about to happen, all the humans and most of the hybrids would die if Darus had his way. “I…I died, I’m dead and my powers didn’t heal me. So I guess we’ve failed.”
“That is where you’re wrong,” the wolf countered, “our power is beyond death. You have been very caring in how you’ve chose to use the gift, you must use it to heal one more thing…” Kyeri looked at the wolf questions abound in his mind.
“The world must be healed.”
Nevo lowered Kyeri gently to the ground; tears still streamed down his face, the black fur of his cheeks shimmered in the moon light. He heard Darus call out the order…attack…that’s what he did.
Two black wolf-hybrids charged forth to fulfill Darus’ orders. Nevo turned, his sword already found it’s way out of its guard. Nevo took them by surprise, he cut them down one with a slash to the stomach the next, to the side and back. He turned and leapt at Darus.
Their swords met.
“You fool, you would bring about your death…” Darus started.
He didn’t have a chance to finish, as Nevo, chopped and cut at Darus with an unending fury. Darus blocked attack after attack, wondering why the combined might of the clans didn’t obliterate Nevo.
The realization came, too late for Darus. In his final moments he realized that his leadership was at stake, both grey and black clans knew this, they waited for the victor.
They didn’t wait long, in that moment when Darus let his mind wander, Nevo went for the kill. Nevo dragged his blade against, Darus’ sidestepped and cut across his stomach. Without hesitation, Nevo thrust his sword deep into Darus’ chest.
Darus dropped to his knees, the sword of the black clan fell to the ground; without remorse, Nevo placed a foot on Darus’ shoulder and pushed his body off his sword.
Nevo stood there, his cheeks soaked with tears, sword dripped with Darus’ blood. After what seemed like an eternity, Nevo let out a breath.
He looked at the sword on the ground by Darus’ body. He knew what it meant, and really didn’t care anymore. Some of the black wolf clan members stepped forward ready to carry out Darus’s last command. Reluctantly, Nevo picked up the black clan sword. He let out a growl from deep inside. “Put down your weapons, this war is over!” he cried. The black-wolf hybrids stepped back and lowered their weapons. Nevo closed his eyes, he couldn’t believe all of this; then something unbelievable happened.
A voice from behind him called his name.
Nevo turned to see Kyeri.
Kyeri’s body glowed a faint blue. Nevo’s heart skipped a beat; my God, Kyeri will live. He thought. Kyeri smiled and stepped closer to Nevo. It’s not exactly as you think Nevo.
Kyeri started to glow brighter. The blue hue became clearer.
“I have to do something. And only I can do it; so don’t be sad, but I must do this to benefit everyone.”
Kyeri was now standing face to face with Nevo. The blue light radiated from Kyeri growning brighter by the moment. Nevo wondered how much longer he could still look at Kyeri with how bright the light was getting.
Kyeri leaned into Nevo and gently kissed his lips. Nevo’s eyes closed and he could feel an overwhelming happyiness wash over him. Kyeri pulled away and gently wiped Nevo’s cheek with his finger. “I will always be with you Nevo. Just think of me and I will be here.’
The light consumed Kyeri, his form faded into the light, slowly at first, then all there was, was blue light. It burned brightly for a moment, then expanded outward in all directions. It swept over everyone, and everything. Everything the light touched was filled with life. Plants instantly grew from the ground, animals that hadn’t been on the earth for four hundred years appeared out of the light. And the light touched everything, all across the planet.
Nevo looked to the spot where Kyeri had been standing and in that spot was a large oak tree; surrounded by grass. Everywhere was grass the hybrids all looked to one another in amazment.
Nevo again started to well up with tears; both of sadness and joy at what Kyeri had done. He heard his voice seeming to be carried on the wind; ‘I love you’ it whispered.
What had happened? Kyeri thought. The answer came from around Darius’ neck. Hanging from is like a fresh kill, was olan’s necklace.
