I'm not catholic, but it's still sad to see so much history and work just go up in flames like that. Looks really eerie inside it now

The good news is that nobody was hurt and all of the artwork and relics within the church were saved.
The stained glass was destroyed on one side but it has been broken before and will be fixed again.
It's still going to take decades until the church is fully rebuilt, but by all reports and expectations, it will rebuild. (And this time, possibly rebuilt up to fire code!)
The cathedral is also the most exhaustively studied and documented building on the planet, quite literally. They can *absolutely* recreate it back to the pre-fire state if they choose to.

Such a terrible shame, knowing the damage that was done. Restoration can continue, repairs can be made... But so much was lost forever. It's heartbreaking. =<
This is so beautiful, in a melancholy way. It captures the emotions of this news very well. Grand, yet terrible to see. Well done work, even if the event to inspire it is a tragedy.

I don't think more than a hundred years of labour and some people's entire lives should be equated to those responsible 'just feel bad'. In fact, certain peoples on social media are rejoicing over this. I prefer to see justice for this, and those responsible held responsible.
You're sounding paranoid, and those photos could easily be taken out of context. They prove nothing.
Time will tell, but it sounds more likely to be an accident. Don't be a tool of those who would divide us. Even if some extremist or ignorant bigot did this or would find some pleasure in it's symbolism, you don't have to stoop to that level.

The level of assumption in the "evidence" provided by conspiracy theorists and right wingers alike is truly saddening. I didn't realize the bar had gotten so low that "It's suspicious" and "These people are smiling" are now sufficient evidence to suggest arson or terrorism- or god forbid, blaming an entire minority group for the destruction of a building.
It's amazing how many people are so ignorant and eager to blame something on "Muslim terrorists" without a shred of evidence, let alone blame all Muslims for the acts of a handful of extremists.
Sadly, I seem to be running into a lot of French people lately who seem particularly susceptible to this type of pernicious propaganda. A day or two after the Christchurch shooting there was a French person on here trying to blame the members of the mosque for their own killing based on a bogus story spread by a right wing French propaganda source.
Of course the French have no monopoly on this. The same sort of crap is all over Europe and here in the US...

Great to see the slime in the world already deciding what the truth of the matter is. Doesn't matter what evidence comes up, it was Islam cause we have cherry picked photos of brown people smiling.
If that's all the cathedral meant to you, then let the dumb thing rot in your miserable hate.
Once again, something that should be a tragedy for everyone is used to cause more hatred in the world.
.
A beautiful picture, though. I wonder how long it will be before rando Twitter users are reposting it with "I dont know who the artist is" tagged on it and some frowny emojis

I'm not a Christian, and I'm certainly not a Catholic, but this is a tragedy because it is a thing of beauty and a human cultural legacy. When you think of the work, energy, love and devotion of generations of people poured into this beautiful edifice it is impossible not to be moved.
In spite of whatever art and relics might have been lost or damaged -and it certainly could have been so much worse- people all over the world are already coming together to contribute to the project of rebuilding, and it will be done, as it has been before.

That is one beautifull way to remember this tragedy forward in time....
there were losses, yet the towers and all stonework still stand... like a broken heart can heal in time, so too will be restored this icon of history... the heart of france..

That changes from reactions in my own country ( which is the France btw), where u had the choices between people wanting to "change the arch following our technological progresses" with 3d version with glass for example. Or a big waves of mockeries and death wishes to all catholics and white french from muslim people.
Trust me thats change and no i didnt invent all this (i anticipate on the futur reactions possible)
