Theodore is a Vision-Seeker, one of a select class who have been trained to see vision in the water. The only magic in an empire that has worked to destroy all traces of magic, Vision-Seekers are employed by the Empress to help her find ways of defeating their enemies. But, Theodore’s visions aren’t following the prescribed order, and he begins to see strange images in the waters, images that he doesn’t understand.

Fernanda is a shifter, a witch who can change into a cat. Aside from the fact that she practices magic and shifts into a cat, her life is normal. On Samhain, she and her mother honor her aunt who had been missing for over twenty years, and as the veil between the living and the dead things, so to does the partition between two very different worlds.
