The downside of being dragon-blooded is that one tends to survive their shorter-lived friends. Danathius's first love was one such man -- a knight-turned-mercenary on the run from his country of origin. The mage had offered him a way to extend his lifespan, so that they could live together for as long as they wanted, but Baird declined the offer. It wasn't right, wasn't natural, he said. After Baird's death, Danathius spent a lot of time alone in solitude in the comfort of his private laboratory, hidden away from the rest of the world. He devoted himself to studying magic as much as he could, before he had the idea to travel to other planes, to catalog and collect information about magic from across the multiverse. That would keep him distracted. Help him ignore his feelings.
"You're awfully quiet tonight," the yellow dragon rumbled, turning his large head to peer at the mage seated upon his leg.
"S-sorry," Danathius stammered, fumbling with his journal in his grip, "I was just thinking about the past. Campfires have a habit of making me do that." The human mage beamed back at Hiryu, the dragon whom he had met a week ago. The dragon, interestingly enough, had the curious ability to shift between human and dragon form. This piqued the mage's interest, and he became preoccupied with learning what he could about Hiryu and his world.
Of course, the bond between the mage and the dragon strengthened, blossoming into a much-welcomed friendship.
"Yeah? Any more interesting stories you could tell me about your past," Hiryu asked with a smirk before turning his head back to its natural position, staring at nothing in particular, "or have you told me all of them already?"
"You want another story," Danathius asked, surprised. But he shrugged his shoulders. "I've got a few more I could tell."
Danathius beamed. He had thanked Hiryu multiple times for listening to him -- no doubt he would thank the large yellow again. In all of his frantic scurrying across the multiverse, he hadn't needed more knowledge: he only needed a friend.
This was a lovely commission I got from
