Because of Zaphira in my Prophecy comic, I started to think a bit more about the hoods for cobras, and I’d like to share a few thoughts about some hood designs I saw. I realised I can divide their hood types to a few different ones. I always thought any type of these can be a strong tool for a character’s personality, and could even represent ears or hair as well. It's important how long it reaches down to the back, its shape, its size and how it connect to the head.
I hope this little thing could be a little helpful too ^ ^
Enjoy!

I LOVE THIS!
I have a snake girl myself that has a hood, I got her recently, and this will certainly help me when drawing her ^^

If anything the simple most traditional hood is the first hood the one it reach down to the lumbar bones the one that rests on the chest area the collar bone? (Not sure but second hood) it seems more of a very uncomfortable postiotion in my designs I have made I tried to think of the hoods connecting to top of the trapizlaters (Your back muscales that make a shape of a kite. Top portion. PS I can't speak it's been a long time since I looked into anatomy LoL 😋) to give the hood that site feel but I guess it be how the Character looks when their hoods are close for the corba hoods show when they are threatened and such. So it's best know that thier hoods should reflect their emontions.
(And I call myself an artist when I can't understand anatomy LMAO 😅😂)

I always love these sorts of exercises, trying to explore how these characters could work! I'd almost like to see "fringe's" on the hoods, like hardened scales that give a "spiked hair" look, or a "Hoop" scale to have it look like ear rings. So much you could do to make them look so diverse, and unique.
I have been working on a redesign for one of my species for a long while now, and the big hangup was that I decided that they needed to have Cobra hoods, but couldn't decide on how it should look in relation to this exact thing: how it attaches to the head, neck and shoulders. This will be very helpful for ideas, thank you!
You can't draw a real life-like cobra hoody if you want tp draw your character with a humanoid body, I think you can only imitate it. It's not easy to find the right line between animal and the human anatomy that works well, so everyone has a different result. So you have to do tests or look for other ideas. I'm glad my ideas were helpful ^^.
Speaking of which, it is clear that everyone approaches this differently. Though I am curious where you draw your inspiration from when you draw snake hoods.
As in, when you draw its overall shape, do you think of them being heavy bags or balloons or pieces of cloth to give them this soft organic look? (ergo, what are your references :3 )
