I realized that Leben's picture here on FA is a bit outdated. This is what he currently looks like (PG rated for general linkage).

Thanks, Meph! What I do is this:
I've got the SL avatar mesh in Maya. I use the clone stamp tool of it's 3D Paint module to copy bits and pieces of fur directly onto the seams. That way, Maya does the ugly work for me. That's the basics.
On top of that, I refined the SL avatar with higher resolution and some extra muscle structures so that the texture baking gives a more defined result. A Photoshop action script then removes the light and shadow seams that come from my irregular light baking on the avatar mesh by simply "smooth copying" bits and pieces of (already "pattern seamless") texture areas to the critical spots at arms and feet.

Love the forepaws, ears and muzzle! and of coruse you've done a breathtakingly wonderful job on the little details and the textures to go with them all. i can't imagine how much time you put into those texture overlays, but it certainly pays off. nicely done ^^
the ref sheet is nicely done too :D
