Backgrounds are hard, and i'd imagine doing them in a small panel on a page would be harder especially so because it has to match the other pictures.
I wouldn't be surprised if anthro comics/pic wasn't their only gig you feel me, there's only so much time in the day. It'd be cool don't get me wrong, but there's alot of reasons why a minimal background is the better option even if you're just generally bad at them, it's better to go that way so it's not as noticeable.
