The main character Romeo from one of my original works- Danny and I Survived
“Before this summer, I had never met a kid like Romeo. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with her that we could identify, so we had all left her to her own devices. She seemed content to roam the woods alone anyway- that was my excuse. I’m ashamed to admit it, but I don’t think she even noticed our neglect. Later, she told me she was used to it.
Now, in a dark new world, she seemed to fall into place; the crooked gear that never fit in before had begun ticking. I could tell, past her consideration for my feelings, my mourning, that she reveled in it. This young wild thing was finding her footing somehow, while I stumbled. It should have scared me- but in a pathetic way, I was grateful. I found myself relying on her. And I couldn’t help but make excuses for this, too- she was the one who found the gun, but I was the one who tried to use it. I didn’t deserve the hope she still felt.
I would live, though, long enough to be her mentor. If nothing else, I could teach her everything she needed to live a long and happy life out here. And deep in my heart, growing stronger every day, was the conviction that she would be the last human to ever do so. It became my mission to prepare Romeo for her inheritance.”
