For centuries mice and rats have played a special role in theater and drama productions around the world. With their small stature and great strength to size they can fit into small spaces and handle equipment that bigums might find it difficult. Here we see some mice puppeteers preparing their puppets and rehearsing for a performance.
These mice are part of company that is made up of a mixture of bigums and mice. The company travels to the various fairs, markets and festivals that were common at the time. Since they are constantly on the move and had to operate with little in the way of transportation support everything is made light and easily portable.
The puppets they are using here are two dimensional and made of light weight materials like hardened leather or thin wood. Sometimes stiffen parchment or paper will be used instead. This makes the puppets rigid and easily stacked for transport. Also they allow quick manipulation by the mouse puppeteers.
These performances were rarely high theater and were sometimes rude and earthy in nature. While sometimes containing original content they were generally just variations on local folklore and stories from the Bible. Still they were an indispensable part of any market or fair.
