Ever Green is a Moon Dweller.
Syllara woke to the quiet sound of an owl that was perched on a branch above her. Her eyes slowly blinked open and her mouth widened to let a yawn drift into the cool air of the night. Syllara sat up, her hair falling around her face, some of it was tangled like a web within her large antlers, “Good morning, Kero,” her head lulled back so she could look up at the owl above her. To anyone else, the response from the owl would be a mere hoot, but to Syllara it was the sound of a distinct British accent accompanied by Kero’s rather pompous vocabulary, “Good evening, madam, such a pleasure as always is it to gaze upon your eloquence and beauty,” Syllara rolled her eyes in response as she rose from her comfortable bed and stretched her legs. She stood at almost five and a half feet tall and, as she stretched her arms above her head, Kero continued hooting at her, “T’is the eve of the full moon, madam,” he flew down and perched atop the wooden frame of her bed, “might you perchance be performing your…ahem, prayers this evening?”
“Oh, stop it, Kero,” Syllara laughed, “I know you just want to see me naked.”
“Well I never!” Kero feigned offence, “It is not the fault of I if the customary traditions require a distinct lack of clothing! Nevertheless, I am but a humble avian creature, nudity is the norm for one such as I.”
“Yeah, yeah, keep hiding behind your fancy words, Kero, I see through you!” Syllara let out a boisterous laugh before removing her dress. The moment the white fabric touched the floor she could see Kero’s eyes widen,
“Ah,” he couldn’t grin, but she could sense the cheekiness in his voice, “the moment I look forward to every month,” he launched off the bedframe, flying circles around her in order to gain a...proper view, before heading out toward the nearby lake.
It was customary for Moon Dwellers such as Syllara that on the night of a full moon they strip themselves naked and swim into the reflection of the moon upon a lake or river. Tonight was no exception and, as she saw Kero fly off, she was quick to pursue. She bounded through the grass of the forest that she called home, launching herself off the trunks of trees and using a little bit of magic to aid in her speed. She reached the shore of the lake in no time at all and the second she felt the water washing against her fur she threw herself into its cold embrace. Diving down into the lake she felt the cold water touch every inch of her body, swimming deeper and deeper into the depths of the lake. She heard the voices of nearby fish greeting her excitedly and after a few minutes of visiting her fishy friends she made her way back up to the surface of the lake. Her hair was now a wet mess around her face, some of it floated like tentacles beneath the water and some of it clung to her antlers, droplets of water falling into the water below. She brushed her wet hair out of her face and looked up at the moon, her eyes widened at its majesty and as she stared, she could have sworn that tonight it was bigger, like Goddess Elyra was looking back down on her. The thought brought the biggest smile to Syllara’s face as she basked within its luminescent glow. It looked so majestic, so beautiful, hanging in the sky like a jewel and, as she bathed within its light she closed her eyes, beginning to quietly pray to Elyra. As she did so, the water around her glowed a soft, vibrant glow that matched the crescent moon that sat Syllara’s forehead. The energy around her was palpable and she could feel the soft gaze of Elyra blessing her.
Shrouded in mystery are the creatures known as Forest Dwellers, their origins a mystery to the likes of man. For centuries they have acted as guardians of the world, blessed with the power of magic. In truth, they were born as the first creation of Soliara, Goddess of the Sun and Elyra, Goddess of the Moon during their passionate love affair. As a direct result from their divine creation, Forest Dwellers are in tune with their natural surroundings and are inherently gifted with the ability to care for the earth. Forest Dwellers come in two distinct variants, Sun Dwellers which reflect Soliara’s radiance and Moon Dwellers that reflect Elyra’s grace. Sun Dwellers are vibrant, regal creatures who have the unique ability to commune with the earth itself, speaking to plants and communing with nature while basking in Soliara’s glow. Moon Dwellers, conversely, are nocturnal, graceful creatures that communicate with the animals of the world, often finding themselves as caretakers to a myriad of creatures.
Forest Dwellers get their name from being guardians of the forests and, whilst they have the ability to travel freely throughout the world, they are most comfortable in their home territories. Within their respective territories, usually large forests, they take care of the flora and fauna and engage in ritualistic prayers and offerings to their respective Goddesses. Within each territory there exists a single Sun Dweller and a single Moon Dweller and, in order to maintain balance in the world, there can be no more than one of each kind in any given territory.
Sun Dwellers are active during the day, bounding with the animals and basking in the sun with the trees, they communicate to their floral friends to discern threats and maintain an acute understanding of the occupants in their territory. In order to make use of their powerful magic, Sun Dwellers must draw from the power of Soliara, making them most effective during the day and rather weak during the night. Conversely, Moon Dwellers are the stark opposite of their Sun sisters, they love basking in the light of the moon or hiding in the shadows of the night and they are extremely nocturnal creatures. Moon Dwellers have the unique ability to communicate with the animals of the world and will spend their time during the night caring for the nocturnal creatures of the forest. Sun Dwellers and Moon Dwellers work together within their respective territories every single day to maintain the safety of its inhabitants; this includes fighting off intruders and restoring life where it has been unjustly taken. Sun Dwellers are capable of restoring plant-life, whereas Moon Dwellers are skilled healers of animals and living beings. This symbiotic relationship allows both Moon and Sun Dwellers to exist in harmony and it has been proven that the stronger the bond is between the two guardians, the healthier the forest and its ecosystem is that they reside in.
As the divine children of the Sun and Moon, Protectors of the Earth and Guardians of the Forest, it is possible for two Forest Dwellers, one born from the Sun and one from the Moon, to join body and soul. When this ritual is performed, the two creatures become one and are no longer limited by the restraints of their previous forms. As one, they can heal both flora and fauna and their full power becomes unleashed, rendering buildings asunder, commanding the elements to destroy their enemies or channelling the power of the Goddesses to heal massive areas of land. Such a feat has only ever been achieved once, when a nation of humans attempted to take the Forest of Algeyra by force and while the humans were successfully repelled and the forest was saved, the two Forest Dwellers were never seen again.
Forest Dwellers, compared to other species like humans, are incredibly rare. Once every thirty years there is a very special day known as The Day of Birth, a day that every Forest Dweller looks forward to and In preparation for this day both the Sun Dwellers and Moon Dwellers perform daily rituals to not only give thanks to their divine creators, but also assist with empowering them. In the morning, Sun Dwellers welcome the new day’s light by performing prayers in the name of Soliara, typically completely naked. Once the prayers are complete, Sun Dwellers check each of their magical wards within their territories and pray at them for no less than ten minutes each to implore the protection of Soliara.
Moon Dwellers have similar rituals they perform each night, as well as checking their own magical wards they also make offerings of animal bones to Elyra and, on nights where the moon is full, they do a special form of prayer wherein they swim completely naked to the centre of a lake or any large body of water and lie in the light of the moon. They believe that reflections are the door to the moon and that by praying in a lake under a full moon that Elyra will favour them.
The reason for these daily rituals is so that every thirty years a new Forest Dweller will be blessed with life by the Goddesses. “As the Sun and Moon become One, the Earth shall be gifted another child of the forest.” is the sacred text memorized by every Forest Dweller who work tirelessly to ensure that they do everything they can to aid in the moon eclipsing the sun.
