Love of cats? Where'd you see that? It's really Lem's love of cats driving this - she originally considered making Mort straight-up into a giant cat, but the elongated canine muzzle was the only one with a hope of devouring a person whole, so Mort ended up a hybrid of cat and wolf.
Okay, I know I got a source for this...gimme a minute...okay, a few minutes, it starts with http://www.furaffinity.net/view/26519602/ and leads to a comment string I had with Lem at one point. Not claiming actual canon-osity, but I choose to BELIEVE Mort's love of cats is canon.
