Here's my contribution to Hyena Day! (even if my gnolls are closer to dogs than hyenas, they're still gnolls )
As the shooting began anew, it became clear that the gnoll was an very good archer. He kept pulling bullseye after bullseye, aiming fast and true.
The mercenaries, refusing to get one-upped, raised their game and began offering a serious competition.
After a few minutes of target slaughtering...
"Okay, let's raise the bar!" proposed Jymez. "See that pole?"
Many poles had been built around the outpost. They were raised high and adorned and tied together with very visible banderoles, making the outpost easy to spot even from afar or in a snowstorm.
But the pole indicated by Jymez was noticeable for having a bird's nest on its top.
"That's the new target! First one to put an arrow in it, I pay him a free drink!"
Thus motivated, everyone began aiming and shooting anew.
But the pole was extremely far, even beyond the walls, and many arrows missed.
Eventually, Rokk was the first to put an arrow in it.
Then another, a bit higher.
And another, still a bit higher.
Slowly but surely, the arrows struck higher and higher, perfectly regular in the ascension.
Only when the bird began angrily cawking because the arrows were getting dangerously close, did Rokk stop.
The gnoll noticed then the astonished expressions of the mercenaries, and chuckled.
"I lived more than ten years with nothing but that bow to hunt and fend off wild beasts. It was getting good or getting dead. Guess which one it was."
The mercenaries didn't answer. But they knew the "feeling".
"So, how many beers does that make for me? A dozen? Might as well make it a whole round for everyone."
Everyone cheered at that, except Jymez, since he'd be the one to pay.
