An idea for a parasitic mutation/transformation.
Initially transmitted among colonists by a (possibly bioengineered) local "wasp", a select minority of the population was transformed into predatory, light-sensitive hybrids capable of injecting various hormonal and toxic cocktails. Luckily, the afflicted colonists mostly retained their faculties and can live mostly normal lives with the help of a small implant to regulate their hormone cycles.
Repeated exposure to the injections of a hybrid can result in the infection being passed on even to those not vulnerable to the "wasps".
