Interesting... It's kind of the same in humans.
In cultures where drinking cow's milk is not normal, humans loose the ability to digest lactose after being weened. However, in cultures where drinking cow's milk became common, the continued ingestion of lactose after infancy keeps the human's body producing the enzymes that digest lactose. And, if people in those milk-drinking cultures stop drinking milk for an extended period of time, they may find that they become lactose intolerant.
