Freya Edirne of Dark Seal / Gate of Doom & Wizard Fire
For all you old school arcade players who are tired of seeing pokemons on here...Here is Freya Edirne from the Data East brand Arcade game, Dark Seal/Gate of Doom and it's sequel, Wizard Fire.
"I'm The Wizard!"
I only played the Gate of Doom arcade game once growing up, but it was an unforgettable experience. It was at a dilapidated old mall, and was down a long dark hallway that led to an exit door that didn't open. Karnov was another arcade game down there, which is another great Data East game, but I had already played the Nintendo port version of that one, so I chose to play Gate of Doom instead, since I had never heard of it before.
I was intrigued by the fantasy medieval setting, the buzzy distorted voices that gave me an eerie feeling and the creepy gory visuals. I only had enough quarters to play as The Wizard and The Knight, but I liked what I saw. I made it to the second level, and happily told my Aunt how my initials were the highest score for The Knight.....of course MANY years later I found out that the high scores reset when the game is turned off, and the starting scores are not very high to begin with, but still, I enjoyed myself that day. I stayed and watched the demo screen for several minutes so I could read more about it and see the other two characters in action.
I only recently learned of the sequel game, Wizard Fire, and was able to try it for the first time. It had improved graphics, better voice recordings and more characters. I still like the first one best, mostly due to the nostalgia of it all. Both games are truly hidden gems of the beat 'em up arcade games from the awesome 90's.
