I think that a different species shouldn't be a problem, heck, my two main R&C characters are a Lombax and an Amoeboid. Especially when it comes to shipping and storytelling, opening the borders and limitations of one species can really add a lot of depth. And if we can have a cute story with Halo, that'd be even better. I mean, Halo is a cinnamon bun and there is absolutely nothing more cute than happy Halo. Like I said, I approve of this ship immensely.
