All those funny buttons in your steering wheel were '58 only, and only on Eeyores. Shift it gently, I had a '61 Imperial where the buttons would fall down behind the 'dash if you wer'nt careful.

I would start by shooting a little WD-40 in there. It's all 50 year old cable linkage and may just need greased.
I would find the factory shop manual before I take anything apart. (public library mabyee?) Being a one year, one car only part, finding another one would be a real bitch.
