If you see cute rats in the pet shop window, do not allow their cuteness to over-take you in to obsessive-compulsive of buying every rat you come across!

We currently have 10 girls of our own at the moment but back years ago we were contending with 26 rats. Unfortunately we had to adopt out most of them to bring the numbers down. It was only a few months ago that the person who was looking after our rats (was cleaning the place up for inspection) that we found she was looking after three of the boys who were adopted out.

hehehe! no worries about that, I already have enough animals at home ;) I don't need 5 more really. :D

I hope you're feeding your snake frozen ratties. It's not only cruel to the rats to feed live, live food can bite back and severely injure your snake.

Guy in the shop told me, that once a guy brought him a stressed rat, who was taken from the snake. Apparently the rat teared the snake's face and turned it into shishkebab.

Eek. See, I love both snakes and rats, so I try to do what is easiest on both's health. Food that is already dead can't injure the snakes, *and* can't be traumatized. :)

that's why i can't have big snakes. I wouldn't be able to feed them in any way, in both cases my heart would bleed. dosen't change the fact that I really love snakes. :D

My snakes aren't big. XD Even small snakes eat young rats, unfortunately. And, to top it all of, it's what's best for their health, but I certainly understand your feelings. ^^

The snake that i own is not holdable due to his aggression. I only ever feed him live, because it seems completely abnormal to feed a living meat-eating hunter something that humans killed and froze by some unspoken "moral" means. Sorry, but my snake was born a hunter, lives a hunter, and is gunna eat squealing, squirming, fighting rat to the day he dies. Ain't i raisin' no pussy animals. >/

Your animal is by default a pussy because it's being kept in a box where it doesn't belong and not in it's natural habitat. Unless you have a football field with walls on it, your snake will hardly be anything like mother nature intended it to be. I suppose live food is as good as it gets.

You can definitely tell what gender they are at that age if you know what you're looking at. There are several websites which should be able to help you!

If they are a male and a female, make sure you house them separately. Rats make better pets as same-sex pairs!

I've heard rats make great pets, and they're very intelligent. Can even learn their names and do tricks!

Yeap. My previous rat was comming over when i called his name or when i was tapping with fingers on the floor. Not to emntion that they attach to their owner very strongly. Once we had a rat who first loosed his health and then died, becouse he missed my mum who leaved for work for 2 months.
