Story:
The streets were getting increasingly more crowded as the interspecies duo made their way to the district's central plaza. With the brief tour done, Scarlett was now guiding her furless friend to a registration terminal. He needed to get registered in order to gain access to his weekly share of the regional currency to spend at the various shops and services, let alone be able to walk the streets without getting his presence questioned.
That was also something the visitor didn't expect to see in this place - law enforcers. He had caught a glimpse of a couple of them whilst making his way to the plaza. Covered in power armour and cloaking their faces with visor helmets, the enforcers looked more like soldiers from a science fiction game rather than your typical police officers. They even carried weaponry to match the set. This had become the current topic he was discussing with Scarlett.
"Despite the system we have in place to make sure people don't go hungry and without shelter, there is always those who desire more than they can afford and will stop at nothing to get their hands on it", Scarlett explained. "With so many different people and species of various natures around, we're bound to rub each other the wrong way. Hence, some sort of jursdictional system have to be in place to ensure everyone's safety"
Her statment was reasonable, he thought, but it still didn't explain the enforcer's outfit. "Why the weapons and armour though? Are the people they apprehend really that dangerous? I mean, it looks more like they are equipped to fight a war rather than maintaining the peace"
Scarlett suddenly stepped in front of the visitor, placing her hands on the his shoulders to stop him in his place. Her face had a very stern expression, as if the question had insulted her. "Despite most things seem safer here compared to where you come from, this world holds the same dangers if not more", her tone had become very serious, but there was a hint of concern hidden underneath as well. "I'll gladly answer the many questions I'm certain you have of this world, as I hope you will answer my questions in return, but it will have to wait! Once we've gotten you registered and found a place to stay we can talk more privately about..."
"You there!"
A voice emanated from the crowd of people close to the duo. Two enforcers, one helmless human and, based on the armour's shape, a wolf, approached rapidly. "What business do you have with that human!"
Scarlett quickly turned to face the enforcers, replacing her previous stern expression with an innocent smile. "He's a new arrival! I was just showing him the way to the registration terminal!"
Her attempt to convince the enforecrs was obviously not good enough, as the human enforecer turned to the visitor. "Is this correct?"
The visitor noded. "Yes, I arrived maybe a couple of hours ago? I can't really tell how much time has passed, or even if you measure time here the same way I'm used to"
Before he could respond, the human enforcer got nudged by his lupine partner. The wolf showed him what appeared to be a holographic video projected by a gadget he was holding. "A unit further up the road reports that these two took a right turn towards the central plaza moments ago. If they were heading for the closest registration terminal they would have taken a left turn"
It felt as the visitor's heart stopped beating for a second as the tension of the situation rose. Clearly, he and Scarlett had been watched, but for what reason?
The human enforcer lifted his gaze from the holographic video and looked straight at Scarlett. "I'd say it's rather odd for a good-hearted citizen to to show a new arrival the wrong way to a registration terminal, especially in an area known to have insurrectionist activity! Still, I can't rule out that you just took an honest wrong turn, but until I can confirm that I will have to ask you to come with us, and you will do so quietly! Resist and we'll be forced to..."
The enforcer was not given the chance to finish speaking. Faster than the visitor could register, two guns had materialized in Scarlett's hands. She quickly fired a quick succession of shots in each of the enforcers, who covered in sparks dropped unconcious to the ground. The crowd of people around them turned to a sudden stop, wondering what all the noise was about. A dread silence engulfed the street as it became clear to the crowd what just had happened.
"Insurrectionists!"
The voice could be heard from across the street, followed by a volley of rounds fired from two additional patrols of enforcers.
Scarlett was quick to act and stepped in front of the visitor, using her body to cover him. "Stay behind me!", she commanded as she raised her guns and returned fire.
Flinched in place behind the towering fox, the visitor could see the enforcers getting forced into cover by Scarlett's furious barrage. One shot found it's way into the side of one of the enforcers, who dropped to the ground in the same fashion as the previous two.
"Move to the side street up ahead! Go!", Scarlett growled as she started to shuffle to her right, still shooting to keep the enforcers behind cover.
The visitor did as he was told and made a run for the alley Scarlett had highlighted. He could hear the sounds of shots from the enforcers hitting the ground around him, which only added to the already strong adrenaline boost this whole ordeal had started. As he made his way into the side street the stomping sound of Scarlett's boots accompanied him as she caught up to him.
Together they speeded through the street, hoping to outrun their pursuiters..
