That's probably close enough to the Fourth of July that you could hit the fireworks while you're at it. And then when everyone's all "Why aren't these going off?" you can be like "Well, it all started when I decided to drink a hundred and forty-seven glasses of melonade..."

This is familiar somehow. I think I remember one or two stuck up web cartoonists trying to goad their acolytes into buying them new computers and stuff, and it's always sort of a passive threat: "I really need this to draw"!
In general, I think that Electra is a rather good portrait of a few real people, but I don't want to call names.

Nah, that's not so bad. What I've seen has been about much larger sums and combined with alot of nasty behavior by people who aren't too far off from the Electra charicature even in other ways.
And there's a big difference between: 'Yo, let me bum 20$ aaaaight?'
and:
'Honestly, if you guys like this comic, is it really too much if ask you help out a little bit? People seem to forget that I'm doing all this for free, for the fans, and blablablabla'
or the classic:
'Woe is me. I have medical bills but I also really need a bigger Wacom-tablet *sob* *sob*'
