Nightfeather is the deadliest peryton to ever exist.
He is the greatest hunter, an apex predator that can fell any creature no matter how large or small.
All whom he hunts cower in fear of his terrible majesty.
The lives of all prey are at his whim.
None dare challenge his awful might.....
.....at least that is how things are in his mind. The actual truth, however, is quite different.
Description:
Nightfeather is a small adult jay peryton buck, about the size of a beagle. His appearance is that of a full grown stag with a thick, neck-ruff, slender legs and simple curved antlers that have just two points each. Nightfeather is a bright blue color with dark blue accents. feathered wings sprout from his back, and instead of a cervine tail, the peryton sports a thicker, more muscular tail with a a fan of strong feathers. The buck has dark teal cloven hooves, that extend further than normal deer hooves, and end in sharpened, slightly hooked points. When his muzzle is open, his sharp teeth can be seen.
Personality:
Oblivious, narcissistic and stubborn. These three words encapsulate the basic personality of this fiery little hellion of a peryton. Nightfeather doesn't just want to hunt for food, he wants to hunt big impressive game. He isn't just a peryton, he is the *greatest* peryton. He is the best hunter, the most cunning predator, and he finds the greatest shinies to attract mates.
Of course, his worldview and how the world actually works differ greatly. Nightfeather is a moderately good hunter, and with his skills could live well off of rodents, bugs and other small prey. Against larger prey and other predators however, things tend to go bad for him. Nightfeather *does* have a rather impressive nest lined with coins, jewels, pieces of brightly colored glass, ribbons, etc....but there no other perytons for a few hundred miles, at least of the small subspecies he is from. He is alone, with no flock/herd to be part of. for lack of a better term, he is pathetic.
Sometimes, in rare lucid moments, he will become aware of his shortcomings. Perhaps the large prey he has picked out ends up thrashing him soundly. Perhaps another predator chases him off. Perhaps he realizes that he is utterly alone, no mate, no fawns, no one to be close to. In those moments, he is utterly miserable....but then his unbreakable determination (or delusion) resurfaces and he steels himself and returns to the task. He is, if nothing else, resilient.
Nightfeather has no understanding of sarcasm, and tends to take words at face value. He is also easily manipulated, and if one massages his ego, he will become quite friendly and even protective of said flatterer, even if he had considered them prey beforehand. He will often find some sort of justification, even if it seems far-fetched or ridiculous. Likewise, any actions that are contrary to his usual personality will also be given some bizarre justification. It is also noted that the peryton is becoming a little desperate, having a buck's natural urge to rut or breed, but no mate to do so with, and will sometimes attempt to court a random female outside his species, usually by means of bringing said female shiny objects, and performing a showy, stylized courtship dance....without actually telling the object of his affections *why* he is doing such actions beforehand.
History:
Long ago, when he was but a fawn with small points instead of antlers, Nightfeather was flying on his third hunt, he was caught in a massive storm. Thrown high by updrafts and buffeted by powerful winds, he was just barely able to survive. When he finally managed to make it to safety, he was hundreds of miles away in an unknown land. He was able to adapt and even thrive in the new place, though, and a few years later, is the peryton he is now.
Here we have Nightfeather, who has just landed on his intended prey, and is making she knows she should be trembling in fear at his greatness. Meanwhile, the mare is contemplating shaking him off and wondering if it'd be woth the trouble of trampling him.
(In drawing this, Nightfeather and the mare were two separate pieces roughly the same size, that I later shrung Nightfeather down to his proper size. However, in trying to thin down the thick lines on the mare to better match Nightfeather's lines, I pretty much butchered it. It's a learning experience.)

Perytons in fantasy can range from winged deer, like Nightfeather, to deer-headed bird-like things like in D&D. Apparently their shadows don't match their shape. I'm also purposefully ignoring the lore about them favoring human hearts for obvious reasons. Nightfeather's subspecies I made up are small and colorful and suited to more tropical climates where there is less large fauna to hunt. They are fairly social, and hunt in packs to take down larger prey. At the same time, they also have natural enemies, such as snakes and alligators. Nightfeather isn't that mature, as he was blown away far from home by a hurricane, and has grown older without the normal pack/flock around him. What he does have is nesting, hunting and other instincts. Because of this, his vocabulary is somewhat limited. Nightfeather always self promotes, using his own name a lot of times, when he knows words like "I" and "me". He is loud, bold and aggravating, but aside from his constant exaggerating of his abilities, he is actually fairly honest about other things, and has some sense of honor...sort of.
