Story:
"What the heck was all that about Scarlett!?"
Exhausted and stressed, the visitor had snapped unable to make sense out of the situation. The duo had managed to temporarily shake off their pursuiters and found shelter in an abandoned building close to an industrial complex at the edge of the district. This allowed for a moment of respite, which unfortunately for Scarlett also meant having to deal her companion's mental breakdown.
"Shhh! Quiet down! Or do you want them to find us that bad?", Scarlett was not in a mood to have this discussion. "I've told you I'll explain everything once we've found a safe place to stay!"
"I've just watched you gun down five people, and you're telling me I'll have to wait to get my answers!? Yeah well, that's not going to happen!"
In addition to the three enforcers that Scarlett had shot in the initial gunfight, two more had suffered the same fate as they had escaped through the streets.
Scarlett sighed and held one of her guns in front of the visitor. "These guns are loaded with electro-cores, just like the enforcers' weapons! They only stun people, they don't kill them!", she put the gun away again, shaking her head. "Bad news is the cores are spent and I didn't bring any extra, which means we can't shoot our way through the next time they block our way"
"Right now I'm not even sure I want to go with you anywhere!", the visitor's memory was starting to catch up. "If you weren't taking me to a registration terminal, then where were you taking me?"
The amazon fox bared her teeth, stepping closer to the visitor. "I was taking you to one, you idiot! One which wouldn't put you in the citizen registry so they could monitor your every move!", she growled as she stood face to face with the human.
Scarlett's large, pointy teeth was certainly not an inviting sight, especially not at close range, as the visitor only stood there frozen in place, having heard what she said but was too frightened to respond.
Realizing the effect her snarling had on her furless companion, Scarlett took a deep breath and calmed herself. "Look, this place is like a spoiled egg - you only see the ugly truth once you crack the shell open. The Conclave, the ruling council of this region, uses the citizen registry to keep track of all people living in the region! It serves as a means to prevent anyone from ever leaving this place! You'll be trapped here, forced to do their bidding! The enforcers are simply there to make sure it stays that way. Those who try and leave get snatched and exposed to horrible things, and some people we don't even hear from again! The resistance I'm part of is trying to overthrow the Conclave and free the people from this slavery", she placed a finger on the visitor's nose. "In other words, unless you want to end up a prisoner here for the rest of your life, I suggest you stay with me!"
The visitor was speechless. He found it hard to believe that everything he had seen so far, the generous living, the easy access to comforts, was just a mask concealing the true nature of this place. "So, the ration points and all the other things..?"
"Just a ruse to make sure people stay where they are! Now, can we please continue moving? The sooner we get to the hideout the better, you know?", Scarlett was almost stomping where she stood, eager to get a move on.
The visitor noded, his trust in the tall fox reassured once again. "Alright, but once we're safe I want all the details, okay?"
"Yes! Just as much as I want to know more about you. It's kind of one-sided that you know a whole lot about me, being my creator and all, but to me you're practically a stranger", the fox said as she opened the door leading out of the building.
Silently the duo made their way into the empty street, making sure no enforcers were around to spot them. It was obviously a dangerous life Scarlett was living, but if what she said was correct the visitor was willing to help, especially if it meant remaining a free individual and liberating others from their ill fate. Still, the fact that Scarlett felt he was a stranger to her made him realize this whole situation was just as taxing for her. He quietly decided to provide Scarlett with the information she wanted about him when they were given the chance to sit down and talk. That was the very least he could do for her.
As they moved into a narrow side street, Scarlett turned to the visitor. "So.. At the hideout, I usually hang out with this wolf I've known for quite a long time. Albeit she appears to be a complete brute who never listens when being told what to do, she's rather sweet and caring. I'm certain she would be happy to meet you!"
Based on the short description, the visitor could already guess who this friend of Scarlett was. However, before he had the chance to answer he felt a stinging pain at the back of his left arm, as if a giant wasp had just stung him. The pain quickly transformed into a numbness that quickly spread throughout his body. Faster than he could blink, the numbness reached the visitor's head, forcing him into a blackout as he dropped seemingly lifeless to the ground.
A patrol of enforcers had appeared, blocking the alley behind the two companions. As they had managed to strike down one of their targets, the enforcers were now closing in on Scarlett. "Surrender or end up like your friend!"
Scarlett was infuriated. She quickly picked up her fallen friend and started to run. "Bite me!", her response echoed down the alley and provoked the enforcers to open fire as they intensified their pursuit.
The hunt continued into the nearby industrial complex. Scarlett's previous anger had now been replaced with desperation, knowing the industrial complex had very few exits. It was safe to assume this was the enforcers' plan the whole time - to chase her and her creator into a more isolated part of the district and then trap them inside. As the fox tried to escape the complex, more enforcers had joined in chase and limited her escape options.
A channel with water from one of the factories was roaring beside Scarlett as she was making a run for one of the bridges overlapping the furious stream. The vixen was only a few feet away from the bridge when yet another patrol of enforcers came running towards her from across the other side, forcing her to ignore the bridge and keep going. Once at the end of the road, there was no side street or broken wall Scarlett could escape through with her furless friend hanging unconcious in her arms. There was only a fence blocking the road ahead of her, the roaring river to her side and the pursuiting enforcers behind her. She was trapped. Unless...
Two options popped up inside Scarlett's head - both equally unsettling, but only one which promised the chance of getting away. She looked down at the visitor who almost looked as if he was sleeping in her arms, only the blank look in his eyes giving away his unconcious state.
"Alright shorty, ready to go on a ride?", she said quietly to him, her breath becoming more heavy as she mustered the courage for what she was about to do.
As the enforcers closed in on her, she stepped back before starting to run. The enforcers, realizing what she was about to do, desperatley took shots at the amazon fox in hopes of still capturing their targets.
Scarlett ignored the imminent danger, her eyes focusing on the channel ledge getting closer as she sprinted forward. Once her foot touched the ledge, she leaped forward and disappeared with her cargo into the dark waters of the channel..
