The history of my art - Short Stuff
While I don't think it's really a mandatory thing to make mention of, I do think it's semi-important to give a short biography of myself and my history as an artist, because it links me a lot to the furry world. A lot of people ask "So how was it you got into the fandom?" I'm an animal lover before I'm anything else. There are pictures of me that my mother has buried away in boxes at her house of me sleeping snuggled up to cats at 7 months old. My grandmother still laughs hysterically over the story of me finding a garter snake and picking it up at age 2, my mom yelling at me to put it down and me shouting back "BUT HE'S MY FRIEND!" while the snake is flipping the fuck out and whipping around in my hand. When I was 4, I remember talking to earth worms out on the playground and the other kids laughing at me for doing so. I grew up with MANY many different animals ranging from small rodents, to cats, dogs, and horses, and I got to know each one of them like the back of my hand. My deep, deep love and respect for animals has ALWAYS been there, and it's always going to be there, no matter how much I may change as an individual. This factor tossed in with my love for creativity and imagination that I got from both my mom and dad was what sparked me to start drawing animals.
By age 5, I was drawing the same animals over and over again, and eventually started giving them names and writing stories about them. The oldest character I have to date is a black and white cat named Short Stuff (look familiar?). I had a teacher back in elementary school that was really a huge fan of the stories I wrote and the art I did about these characters I made. He suggested I look into art books to better help me develop my art. And so my mom took me to the library. I checked out 10 books at a time and started researching the history of comics and some of the really old comic strip animals (Krazy Kat, Fritz The Cat, Felix The Cat were just a few that inspired me).
By age 12, my characters had full blown personalities all of their own and I started writing comics for the school news paper in Junior High, most staring Short Stuff. I often used Short Stuff as a plug to make light of alot of the stress and everyday issues I had going on in my own life, humor being the best way to get through situations. And as a result of that, I started developing a "bond" I guess you could say with this character I created and thus he became my alter ego. The character became famous through my school paper comics and was well loved. I often left pictures of him on the school chalk board with some witty remark about the class and the teachers actually thought it was great. Maybe I was just lucky lol
Warner Brothers cartoons I think were probably one of my greatest influences outside of old comics. You can still see some of their style in my art as well as a bit of their humor. As time went on, I got online and discovered role-playing. Since it involved creative writing and animals, I fell head first into this and just never stopped. I came up with others characters for the sake of this, and eventually Short Stuff kinda fell into the past.
It wasn't until I met Willow 5 years ago and he told me all about the furry world that I "perked my ears" so to speak. That was the year I came up with Sachi, who in all honesty, is just an adult female raccoon version of Short Stuff. Nothing has changed aside from the maturity, gender and species. There are a lot of things about the fandom that has disgusted me to the point where I've thought about just up and leaving it FOREVAH!!11 but even if I did, not much would change. I'd still be doing the same God damn thing I've been doing since I could pick up a pencil and probably will be for the rest of my life.
