The Armorican Peninsula is a strange and wondrous place, a land full of magic and mystery, where the mortal realm of Bedouar and the timeless vastness of Faerie coexist side by side, the great veil ripped apart by uncontrollable magic, causing time and space to collapse into disarray. Unearthly fog rolls in, cutting off travelers from where they came and pure magical chaos rolls across the region in great storms. Fortune can be found in the borders of Faerie to the brave and the lucky, death for the foolish.
The treacherous coast of the region, the Ar Mor Bras, is no stranger to these twists of fate, home to the lost city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves and its accursed princess, Ahes Dahut. Throughout the ages, some individuals find themselves caught in the whirlpool of magic surrounding this mystical site, and are drawn in by the phantom bells of the sunken city and the enchanting, enticing song of those trapped by its curse...
This Mermay, I've undertaken a project to design several characters, each based off of a traditional D&D Class, as they may appear in the world of Kroashent. I am tying to really go out on character design this month, so please let me know what you think of these characters and their written stories!
A shocking betrayal decimates a once-powerful group of knights, leaving the defenders of humanity shattered and on the run from their former allies. After a brutal purge has decapitated their leadership, their assets seized by corrupt rulers, a small band of the Urzh Kroashent (Knights of the Crossroads) finds themselves in the capital city of Perys as the rigged trials and speedy executions reach their crescendo. Led by an inexperienced commander, the group has one shot at making their way to safety, past the reach of King Philippe and the Southern Church. But darker things lurk on the waters of Mor Bras that threaten to plunge the paladins into a darkness they could not have imagined.
Author's Notes:
On Ai'Sha and the Urzh Kroashent: I went into Ai'sha's design with the goal of making a non-traditional Paladin to reflect of the role of the Urzh Kroashent and the differences between the world of Bedouar and "Real-World" Medieval Europe. While Kroashent draws heavily on real regions, cultures and histories, it is intended to be a fully different, fantastic world. One of the most direct examples is the relation between the Knights of the Crossroad and their obvious inspiration, the Knights Templar.
In the world of Kroashent, the UK served as a protective force against the chaotic magic and alien agendas of the Faewylde (The primordial magical chaos of the deeper regions of Faerie). Traditionally, the border between the mortal world and Faerie is thinner at "liminal" places, a spiritual connection between two planes (E.G. Islands (Sea+Land), Mountains (Land+Sky), Tumulous Mounds (Life+Death)) Crossroads serve as another such place and are the symbol of the UK, a equilateral cross within a circle.
While the cross does have some Celtic symbolism on its own (as a bronze-age symbol of the sun), in the real world, it obviously carries implications of Christianity. In Kroashent, this is not the case and the Order, while allied with the Southern Church for much of its history, is not primarily a religious order, as the Templars were. Their mission was to protect humanity from the more destructive aspects of Faerie, rather than a particular faith, although this interpretation often coincides with reality for much of the Order's history and many of its members belong to the Faithful. This difference is actually a major source of friction with the Southern Church in Universe, ultimately leading to the events of Kroashent. Rather than the cross, the symbol of the Southern Church is the Sun.
Ai'Sha is one such exception, a Saracen who joined with the Order in defense of the city of Iram of the Pillars. I have decided to use the archaic term Saracen to apply to the Islamic inspired peoples of Bedouar to reflect the general time period of the setting. Ai'sha has donned the tabard of the Urzh Kroashent because she supports its mission, but has not converted to the Southern Faith.
On Notre Dame de Paris: Ai'Sha's story heavily features a scene in Kroashent's equivalent of Notre Dame de Paris, where Templar Grandmaster Jacques de Molay was burned at the stake in in 1314 CE, an important part of Templar Lore. This story was written prior to the tragic fire that consumed much of the great Cathedral in 2019. I have decided to keep the references to Notre Dame de Paris in place for the story.
