Early concept sketches for what a Tapitan head would look like. The species' most defining feature is the ornamental, shield-like frill behind the head. The frill contains micropores which serve as a sort of third and fourth nostril, as well as air channels. Inside these channels are resonant membranes. Tapitans can "exhale" through these membranes, producing a sound that is unique to each individual. Stimulation of this membrane activates bioluminescent organs within the frill and on other parts of the body.
