More thoughts and sketches from the dreamscape of Andur. One of the more recent population groups to appear in the city are the fennecs. In recent years though several hundred of them have moved and settled down within Andur's city walls.
Outside of the city most fennecs live a nomadic lifestyle. They travel with their herds in large clan-like groups on circuit from various grazing and watering holes. While groups of fennecs will come in contact with one and another on occasion, as general rule they have worked out a system that avoids too much conflict over resources out in the desert. Besides their immediate clan members the only other people who fennecs come into contact on regular basis in the desert are merchant traders.
Since these traders are often the only regular source of materials the fennecs can not make, it is not uncommon for particular groups of fennecs to all have the same item. Example, knives.
This is a sampling of the various types of knives I have seen fennecs wearing who have recently arrived in Andur. While in many case they are just small belt or skinning knives for regular bigums, in the hands of the fennecs they become large belt knives or even small short swords. The quality of the knives is so-so and they do seem to spend a lot of time sharpening them on a routine basis, but they seem to always have a fine edge on them. Ornamentation on the knives is very simple, and sometimes the fennecs but just blades and build the handles and scabbards to fit their own tastes.
With arrival of so many fennecs in Andur the ease at which one can identify which clan a fennec is from just by their knife is starting to break down. No longer do they have purchase whatever the traders can buy cheap and sell to them they can get it directly in the marketplace. In fact many clans send members on effectively extended shopping/ foraging trips to buy goods in Andur and have them sent out their clan members still living in the desert.

Yeah kind of does....hadn't thought that, but then again I've got some pretty nasty steel in my kitchen. Historical the design is rather like the scramasax of Northern Europe. Who knows maybe it was inspired by the Valhaullan Vikings http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2821173/ who have been visiting Andur for awhile now
"What does the inscription on the handle mean?"
"It's a spell from the great mage, 'Gin-su'. It gives the blade a supernaturally-keen edge. See here, I can cut this ceramic potshard right down the center and it's still sharp enough to slice this tomato parchment thin. Now, I ask you, how much would you pay...?"

Yeah #7 is flattened like a thick leave. #2 T-rib does give it a reinforced tip for stabbing but it was also done sometimes to give strength to the tip when less than ideal steel or forging was done. #2 is still that Abdul's clan preferred and you are correct I've seen it go through chain mail with no trouble at all. Even considering that Abdul is not very heavy.
Many blade styles found today are derived from shapes developed hundreds of years ago. There job hasn't changed in many cases so continue to useful. It is more in material and manufacture used to make blades and handles/sheathes plus the whims of fashion that can greatly change the appearance. But I've seen blades from the Middle Ages that with Kydex handles and sheathes that would look very 20th Century.
This is a very fascinating look into fennec culture, not to mention a nice selection of steel. If I read the description right, it seems that most, if not all, fennecs are armed with knives. Part of me wondered if this would cause any legal issues within Andur, but given the era, I'd imagine that just about everyone in the city is armed to some degree, so I doubt having a bunch of little canines with blades would be that much of a concern.
To quote Eleanor of The Lions in Winter:
"Of course he has a knife, he always has a knife, we all have knives! It's 1183 and we are barbarians!"
I am interested in what sort of animal fennecs herd, though. Are they similar to what bigum nomads herd, or something more manageable for one of a fennec's size?

Yes, to some degree everyone carries some form of knife with them. Even if it is just a tiny paring knife for cutting fruit and slicing flat bread. The one thing that gets people in trouble with fennecs sometimes is that the fennecs are such accepting, undemanding folk they can be perceived as being pushovers. They'll tolerate a lot but there is line, and it is not really clearly labeled, that can be crossed and then these sweet adorable little fennecs turn into dangerous little predators. Worse if you wrong one fennec, or someone they respect and care for, in the group you'll usually not find yourself facing just one angry fennec but often all the fennecs in the immediate area! And fennecs are masters at cutting tendons, ligaments and attacking joints, so in no time you can find yourself lying face down in a street unable to stand with a circle of fennecs staring at you with sharp steel in their hands. Better hope the City Watch show up!

The fennecs primarily herd a small capybara-like creature which is related to the bindal which is my worlds replacement for oxen an cattle. I seem to remember that they call them Gunpa. They harvest them for meat, leather, wool, milk, and other materials. However some fennecs do herd bindals and a few adventurous fennecs even have camels!

#5 looks like a Liston Amputation knife which would be useful if you were a surgeon in their tribe but if I had to chose one it would be #4. It has a nice heavy blade for chopping but could still be used for skinning, hacking through underbrush or fighting if need be. Nice collection all around though.
