Continuing the tests with this relatled piece, it was always one of my favourites, for the sense of space and distance. The coloured versions of this were based on the original black and white inked pieces. Later, I altered photocopies to eliminate the deer-like characters. This was done to placate Jerry Collins, but I don't think it worked... The coloured pieces could not be altered, but were never seen in print or on-line until now.
There were, I think, two or three of these coloured. One I kept. One I might have sold at an SF con. And the third I would probably have given to Jerry, to keep or sell, as his share from the sale. I have it all down in my file card system, but don't feel like digging them out right now.

And they were usually charter members of an off-planet neo-Nazi movement. That's something Bode would have never seen eye-to -ye on. Bode was an unregenerate Hippie.
Jerry also seemed to have a thing for smoking. Don't think it was tobacco. There was something else in the pipe. He shared that personal vice with Bode too.

A pair of hot air balloons was the first thing that occurred to me. Probably an eye-jerk reaction to their shape, except that if they flew parallel, or if there were a third ship flying in formation, I could better imagine an impressive velocity to match those big air scoops (and those teeth, Grandma).
The landscape, with its awesome sense of distance to the horizon, brings a sense of quiet tranquility (as previously noted). My mind's ear does not want to hear turbo engines screaming across the sky. I'd rather be happily lost in the clouds, floating along with them.

When I proposed we create a shared world that overlapped with his bambioid stuff, I was hoping it would spur him on to creating tigher models and more finished work. But it not only didn't, he was hostile to the very idea that he needed to improve anything. So every drawing was sui generis, and there was never any definitive uniform, sidearm, spacecraft, map or anything. Sadly, his later publications were just derivative from his earlier ones -- Bambioids vol. 6 or whatever, with a whole new batch of uniforms and weapons. Let us just overlook some of the odder folios, like "Sexy Gorillas."
Yes, Chennaults "volunteer" force that fought the Japanese in China, once the US entered the war in 1941.
USAF Phantom jets flying over Vietnam wore Flying Tiger colours. I built an F4e version with jungle camoflage and the shark's mouth. I'm not certain of it, but I believe various squadrons have used the same motif right up to the present.
