Balancing Pelican

Taken from the Newport Beach pier as a strong cold front was blowing through. This amazing pelican was riding the air currents, soaring overhead for minutes at a time. Such a gracefull show of winged skill. I like this shot because it looks like his wing is pivoting on the Washington palm in the background.

Good news, last month, they were removed from the endangered list. According to Wikipedia, "Since then, the population of Brown Pelican had been climbing and was recently removed from the list in November 2009. Current estimates place the population at 650,000 individuals"

Oh, that is so cool! I had no idea they were endangered. They are such amazing flying machines. When they ditch into the sea in pursuit of a fish, you know nature is serious...

Neat, we have them in Atlantic Canada as well. They can get to be very large birds. It is neat to watch them fishing.
