Stellarmass - Sycrine
Here's a Stellarmass species that you aren't allowed to talk to yet, just in case an introduced virus could make them all sick. Be careful!
Sycrine are mammals from the planet Indago. Planet Indago is a medium sized terrestrial planet is mostly covered in dense forests and wide freshwater oceans. The north and south poles are iced over, and the planet has five moons. It takes 540 Earth days for the planet to orbit its sun, Lazu.
Most of the planet is rather temperate, with mild winters and summers and an overall warm temperature. There landscape is full of large trees and other plant life, which makes the biodiversity very lush. Most of the animal life are amphibious and fish far outnumber other species. There are large flying mammals called the Dargroons which prey on the larger animals and on occasion, the Sycrine themselves. A large furry creature resembling a deer (called the Stig) are the favorite prey of the Sycrine. They also fish, trap small animals, and gather fruits and plants.
Most of the terrine range from forested mountains, to sandy beaches, and flat boggy plains. Most Syncrine live on the mountains where stable ground can be found to build on. Weather is rather mild, with small thunderstorms and rain. Snow can be found in the far north and south. There are two active volcanoes on the planet with low activity. Sycrine do not leave near these places. The common color shade is blue, due to the incredibly high abundance of cobalt on the planet.
Native folk build their villages on rock bases and sturdy ground. Villages consist on wattle and daub huts covered in leaves to protect from the elements. They don’t like being exposed, so villages are built in among trees to prevent aerial attack. These trees are incorporated into the village and are used to construct look outs and used as living foundations to much bigger buildings. People live in large family groups in things akin to a longhouse, where everyone eats, sleeps, and cooks close with each other.
Current technology is on the same level of stone age humans. They can make and use spears, bows and arrows, clubs, and poles. Cordage is either sinew from kills or braided plant fibers. They make use of bone and leather for clothing and lodging. They have the use of flint and stone axes, hammers, and knives and can notch them enough to fix them to sticks. They make and use earthen pottery and express creativity through tempera paints and charcoal drawings on flat stones or cured hides.
They have learned to domesticate some small animals for companionship and mutual gain, but have yet to learn how to tame animals to be beasts of burden or farm on a large scale. They mostly are hunter gatherers and know enough that they can plant a fruit seed and get a tree out of it, but not enough to warrant full time farming. They have a mutual relationship with a species of flying insects who act as sentries. In return for being fed and petted, the insects keep watch and make a loud noise when danger is about. These insects resemble something akin to a cicada, but fuzzier.
The Sycrine are the only sapient residents of the planet. They evolved as arboreal mammals who have since made their way to the ground. Food became scarce in the canopy, and they needed to move to the ground if they hoped to continue to eat and live. They can still climb, but are now more at ease on the ground. Their long tail is a remnant of this, but its use now as a way to silently signal others and as something warm and cuddly to snuggle into while sleeping. The have evolved a sharp ‘beak’ tooth that lets them get into hard nuts and break bones to get the marrow inside. They are opportunistic omnivores and enjoy a very wide diet. They hunt in small hunting parties which others in the village gather what they can forage. All that is found and caught is shared among the people and a communal food storage hut is open to all.
Sycrine are marsupials, and give birth to underdeveloped young after two months of pregnancy. Joeys are then moved to a pouch, where they stay until fully able to stay out, at around 2 years old. Sycrine are fully grown at around twelve years old, and can live into their 80’s, surprising as they are still preyed upon by other animals and carnivorous plants.
The antenna on a Sycrine sense changes in the air, down to even the smallest molecule vibrating. This is an early warning system that helps prevent being preyed on by their main predator, the Dargoons. It is also sensitive and used as a bonding tool between mated pairs, or comfort between parents and offspring. Female have longer antenna than males, but both function just as well as the other. Females are marsupials, and raise one joeys at a time in her pouch.
Society is peaceful and can be considered somewhat socialist. All is shared together, good and bad. Fights happen, but are rarely more than just screaming and shoving.
So far they seem to be doing okay, and may perhaps discover metal smelting in another few decades.
They are currently a NO CONTACT species. The planet however, is still being monitored subtly just to make sure they are doing okay. Talks of contact will begin after it is determined that contact won’t injure or destroy their society in any way.
