I believe that's an Hawaiian Bird of Paradise pod. I had seen one of those at a botanical gardens once. Very awesome looking!

I don't blame you for falling in love with this esoteric piece of natural beauty. Many people die before they ever see something so wonderful.

Somehow I was lucky enough to live in Hawaii on a farm for 2 months and amidst my toilings in the dirt with the 10 inch centipedes I witnessed numerous flowers like this open and close every day between the spinning of the sun and moon in the dance of night and day. After working 7 years in a gas station under florescent lights being told I was a loser everyday on the mainland the first moment I witnessed that the natural world outside of corporate america is capable of feats such as the one you have eloquently captured here I wept tears of joy.
