It isn’t, but turns out really, really, REALLY old magical hardware doesn’t take kindly to being force-shutdown while operating. It’s the magical equivalent of pulling your USB out without dismounting it first, only. y’know, more explodey.

I'd liken this more to having a problem with an obsolete product. Seriously, nobody works on these devices anymore! The company being out of business doesn't help.
