Veldyr stepped nimbly around the corner and into the shadows, his black and grey fur leaving him little but a shapeless shadow in the dark alley. He had enough sense to know that the individuals following him weren't simply coming just to get a look at the one-armed stranger. He drew his hood back and raised his snout, catching the scent of his would-be attackers on the wind.
His lips pulled back in a grimace, he could smell both of them. They were fully alert, and reeked of malice and intent. By their tread alone he knew they were experienced. Enforcers from the local cartel, he guessed. He gripped the handle of his survival knife, drawing it and twirling it expertly to a reverse grip. The blade glinted in the moonlight and he listened, still and silent as the footsteps drew nearer. He held his breath and tensed, steeling himself in preparation.
Time to make a first impression.
