“How do I look?” Auran the lucario struck a pose to model his new shirt. A sleeveless top starting with pink at the top, transitioning to purple at the midsection before turning to blue. Everything about his appearance denoted a joyous disposition. However, the person he was modeling for— a disheveled midnight lycanroc— looked as though the vibrant color scheme was burning his eyes.
“That looks so gay,” Remus sneered.
“Yeah, that’s the point,” Auran laughed. One would think he would have been angry at such a childish response, but for his brother, he was willing to give it a pass. Standing side by side, they were quite the odd pair. His younger brother dressed head to toe in black. A skull print embedded on his shirt; spiked wristbands that looked like cheap toys; and a single earring poking out from his overgrown, scraggly hair. Remus tried so hard to look intimidating that it had the opposite effect. It made him look cute, like a kid trying to look tough.
“I thought you were supposed to wear rainbow for gay pride stuff,” Remus asked, only half interested.
“Yes, but these colors are specifically for bisexuality,” Auran explained.
“Whatever. Can we go? I’m bored as shit,” Remus complained.
Auran sighed and rolled his eyes. For as much as he tried to be patient and kind, his brother had a way of wearing him down. “Yes, your majesty. Sorry to waste your time.”
“Hey, you decided where to go. I mean, you’re dragging me to that dumb pride parade in Unova just so you can find a primarina boyfriend,” Remus retorted. Auran got the impression Remus had been waiting a long time to say that.
Auran wasn’t insulted. He changed his tone to the one he used whenever lecturing the younger canine. “Hey, it’s not about hooking up with people. It’s about embracing who you are, regardless of sexual orientation,” he explained. “But, if there are some male primarinas, I won’t complain,” he added quickly.
The younger canine was only half-listening. Something caught his eye in the store window. It was another shirt like the one his brother had, albeit slightly different. “Hey, what’s that other one?”
Auran looked at him curiously. “What one of what?”
Remus pointed. “That shirt. The one that’s pink, yellow, and blue. How many of these things are there?”
Auran ignored his crass tone and tried to answer the first question. “That’s for pansexuality, I think.”
“The fuck is that?” the lycanroc asked plainly. His brother shushed him a little. Remus actually didn’t mean to sound rude that time. He just naturally had a filthy mouth.
“It’s like if you’re attracted to everyone.”
“Like you?”
Auran hummed, “Not exactly. Pan people don’t care about gender at all. They’re just attracted to the person.”
Auran expected another smartass reply that he would have to correct, or apologize to passerby, but Remus didn’t say anything. He just stood in silent contemplation. “That’s...interesting,” Remus said, one of the rare times sounding his own age.
A hint of curiosity passed through Auran. It was either his ability to sense people’s aura or just his ability to read his younger brother like a book, but he could tell something important had happened to Remus. “Do you want to get that shirt?”
Remus snapped back to his snotty demeanor. “I’m not gay, Auran.”
“I never said you were,” Auran replied, all the while giving Remus the warmest, most sincere smile he could muster.
His efforts were ineffective on Remus. The rock pokemon at least softened up a bit. “So, are you ready to go now?” he asked earnestly.
“Sure,” the lucario responded. He didn’t want to make the lycanroc uncomfortable. The siblings walked down the sidewalk together. Before they hit their stride, Auran unexpectedly wrapped an arm around his brother’s shoulder. “But just so you know, whatever you are, I’ll love you just the same.”
Remus groaned at the corny sentiment and swatted the arm away. “I hate it when you get all sappy and shit.” The pokemon continued their stroll and Remus turned to his older brother. “But thanks, Auran,” he whispered.
“Anytime. Now, when we get to Unova, try not to get into any trouble. I don’t want to have to bail you out of anything.” The saccharine moment between them had disappeared as quickly as it appeared, and the squabbling atmosphere supplanted it.
“What are you talking about? I’ve never done something stupid in Unova,” Remus said defensively.
“Oh really,” Auran teased, “What about the time you picked a fight with a scrafty because he was shorter than you and then I had to help out of the dumpster?”
“Oh, you have to bring that up, don’t you?”
“Yes I do,” Auran giggled and playfully punched the lycanroc’s arm. “It’s just too easy to embarrass you.”
Remus smirked. “If that’s the case, remember that time we snuck into a R-rated movie and you pissed your pants in the theatre?”
Auran’s face immediately turned red which made the lycanroc laugh. “Th-That was like ten years ago!”
“It’s still funny,” Remus stuck his tongue out. “And remember that time you used my skateboard and face planted in front of a bunch of girls?”
“Shut up,” Auran said amiably. The lucario threw a punch that the lycanroc dodged who took off running.
Remus stayed out of arm’s reach, laughing the whole time. “And when we went on the biggest rollercoaster in Nimbasa and you cried when we got to the front of the line?”
“I’m gonna kill you,” Auran threatened lightheartedly. The lucario chased after his little brother just like how he did when they were kids. They certainly had an interesting way of expressing their love for each other.
