as for rust monsters, I once overheard a story like this:
as the group came to the dungeon entry they found an iron golem guarding it. now, they had encountered a rust monster, and simply avoided it. one of the characters had a large roll of fine copper wire in his pocket, and so they laid a track from the rust monster to the iron golem, and just leaned back...
