I sat down with the sketchbook last night and just started drawing, worked from the head down, erasing and redrawing as necessary until, voila, we have a pitcher. I like how he turned out. :)

It's a good idea, a tail flap. I always wondered how they'd do it! I think the critters I draw would just rip a hole, but this is a more elegant solution!
