"Too tight!" I winced as Luna wrapped the bandage around my tail. I sat rubbing my wrist, my hand already tingling from the taut bandage. I kept my fingers in motion and gritted my teeth.
"Oh, what's wrong?" came the mocking reply. "Big bad warrior can't take a little gauze?" As if to punctuate her remark, she pulled it even tighter. I yelped in surprise at the sudden motion, and she couldn't help but chirp that strange chirp which might have passed for a laugh among her kind.
"You're strangling my tail, Luna! I don't want it to fall off to - ow! - lack of blood flow!"
"Well then maybe you should take better care of yourself so that I wouldn't have to."
The rain grew heavier, soaking through the gauze on my wrist. Great. My scales would be itchy for days, I knew it.
"Hrmph...I can do it myself, you know," I muttered.
"Relax." That chirping laugh again. "I like helping you."
I looked down and breathed a heavy sigh, then lifted a wing to shield my friend from the downpour. Her face was so hard to read, but I took her gently leaning in - and what seemed to be an attempt to loosen the bandaging - as a thank you.
"Feeling better, Arix?" she asked, cutting off the rest of the dressing and fastening it.
"...I suppose."
She laid my tail down and playfully punched me in the arm. "Come on, I'm sure you've had worse. Weren't you just bragging the other day about defeating the Ice Gryphon of Arkis? You must have taken some injuries in that."
"...yeah..."
"Oh, come on. Perk up!" She rested a gentle hand upon my pauldron. "I promise I'll tell everyone you were hurt in some epic battle to protect me, and not by clumsily falling into a dart trap."
"I-it was an epic battle!"
"Yes, and I'm sure those darts will think twice before assaulting you again." Luna rolled her eyes and leaned in closer, almost hugging my arm. "Give me a smile, you."
I pointedly looked away, but shifted my wing to shelter her from the rain.
"That's the best I'm going to get, huh?" Keeping one arm looped around mine, she lifted her other hand and rubbed at the scar over my chest. "Still playing the tough warrior hero?" Despite myself, my tail gently tapped upon the ground beside us.
I turned my head to hide a smile, though the chirping sound beside me told me that I had done so quite poorly.
"There it is."
