I almost drowned when I was nine, ever since then I've had a fear of being in deep water. I'm fine with water normally, and I even enjoy boating. I just can't be 'in' it. :D

Because they require light to photosynthesise and the most energy abundant wavelengths of light are lost at relatively shallow depths in the water column. Thus if they want to get the most from the sunlight, they need to extend all the way up to areas where it's shallow enough for them to get those higher energy wavelengths. :3
I like to think that I love the water normally, but I have to say that I'm absolutely terrified of open water or even murky water. The kind where you can't see the bottom, just an impenetrable wall of blue, brown, or green. I have a horrible fear that something might be lurking just behind that wall. I have terrible nightmares where sharks or tentacles (and not the fun kind!) swim up, grab me and drag me down into the depths.
I'm INFINITELY afraid of deep water, especially deep dark water I can't see the bottom of or imagine the depth of. That's the scariest thing in the whole world, as if something pulls me down there, unable to breath or see or easily move, there is no way I could ever escape. And I have no idea what's down there... Also I suck at swimming. Why swim at all when there are bridges?
