Heh. Gawain is not stupid. This is a win-win for him. If the annoying little roebuck succeeds, a threat to his mate's family is defeated. If he doesn't succeed, no more annoying little roebuck.

I think that Gawain has the utmost of respect (albeit grudging) for 5th and his abilities. There have been hints at that in previous episodes. IIRC, there was even the question asked by Gawain if 5th would serve him as loyally as he had his father.
