Near the end of 2014 I created a character that would completely change my life forever, introducing me not only to the world of furry but the friends I cherish today.
Initially inspired to undertake realistic werewolves [which proved too complex for me at the time], I tried a simpler, cartoon approach and on the very first try it resulted in the first drawing of then unnamed Javi you see here. I distinctly recall that extremely satisfying "EUREKA!" moment. This was it! What I had been wishing for years, a personal character all my own! [At the time he was not considered a furry, I didn't even know what a furry was]
My love for him blossomed rapidly to the point that he acquired my own name and became my fursona, a complete mirror reflection of myself, the same soul. Now I cannot imagine my life without him! ❤

Wow that's some real good progress! Good job!
It is motivating to see what you can achieve if you just put some effort into it.
I feel the same about having my fursona. Once I chose my name and made a first design on the 17th April of 2007, it has always been mine. And I don't plan on changing it. <3

While there were times in the beginning when I felt discouraged by looking at other people's high quality styles and artwork, I loved him too much to give up. I was just happy to have a personal sona, all of my own.
The fact that you still keep memory of the exact birthdate of your fursona demonstrates how special he is to you! It's a bit of a regret I can't remember Javi's brithday, but at least I know the year. Part of the what makes being furry rewarding is having a personal character that we put our heart into and express proudly.
Thank you very much, I sincerely appreciate it! = D

Oh yes I agree! The expression of our fursona is definitely one huge part of what makes us furry.
And I feel like, you can even go outside the fandom to express your character. Non-furries might tell you "Oh wow, that's cool, I like that idea!", or some even become very interested into the fandom itself then. The only negative feedback I got was from people who already knew furries before and decided to hate on them for the lols.

Well, I'm a strange case that I never ever have revealed my drawings, much less my characters to anyone in person, lol. But you are right nonetheless! Even non furries, while maybe not getting into it, are curious and can have fun learning about us. Unfortunately a lot of people like to hate for the sake of blindly following the crowd. I get it occasionally just for having an icon of one of my characters on non furry sites. But it's best to just ignore the hot air and continue having fun in what we love, along with the people who respect and understand us.
True though if I am honest I made that sketch of Javi around November of 2018. Though from then and now he hasn't changed so it's still appropriate I think. [I can't lie to the viewers]
If you were to look back at your own art, you would see a bigger change than you think. I hope it inspires you to keep on improving.
[That line is how I feel almost everyday! = D]

Ah, Leey, it's kind of an honor to hear it from you because like I mentioned to you before, I was getting inspiration from various artists at the time not the least of which was your coyote. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11776938/
Unlike the complicated to draw werewolves I had been looking at, I loved his simple yet characterful and cute style and wanted something similar, easy to draw.
