I hate how modern character artists put so much work and effort into making their VILLAINS unique, interesting and likable, yet they don't do the same with their heroes characters. I've always disliked that about Mario, and it's one of the reasons I've been so hesitant to play Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze because the bad guys are just so much cooler than Donkey Kong.
Eh... I strongly disagree, the more simple the character you are controlling the better so you can easily see their movements and animations, and like Mario and DK are from platforms they can't be complex, because most of it you need fast pace so if the character is super complex would have a problem to like make the game slow so you can see them without mixing with the background or you play as a blur for the most part. Like the most memorable stages from Tropical Freeze are the ones you can only see shadows for a reason.
And most enemies from Tropical Freeze aren't this unique, like a bird with mask, just a rat and turtle with goggles, like most of them or are just an animal/monster with funky colors or have an item or two max, not so different from DK that is a gorilla with a tie.
You can have your preferences but for me simple characters are miles better than anything with complex designs, but I always hated complexity on character designs mainly in games I think most of it is lost when the character starts to move.

I don't think that is the problem so much as the main characters of almost all media these days are human-sues (only humans are good, all other life is evil, only cares about humans, only allies with humans, Etc). In addition, it always feels like the main character doesn't have a single original idea compared to the villains. A lot of times, especially in Nintendo games, the villains are bombastic and brimming with energy, and the heroes... Are virtually devoid of that kind of stuff. In Super Mario Odyssey, I'm kind of appalled that all the villains are so Charming, yet all the friendly characters are bland and uninspired.
With Donkey Kong, it might just be that I don't like apes in general. Humans, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans... I feel like they make boring protagonists. even with a lot of the simpler enemies, they tend to be more appealing to me because they aren't Apes. I'm not entirely sure, what does Donkey Kong even get rambi in that game?
Can't argue with that for the most part. That's probably why I like a lot of earlier Pokemon more than later ones. That being said, I always found semi simplistic designs and later Generations I like. It wasn't until Generation 7 where I disliked just about every single design.

I agree with the too many humans, I read that was because most people don't relate to anything that is too different from a human what I call bull, in the past had many animal characters they were even considered to be the bests of their time, I think is more thanks to the gamers 90s mentality that gritty equals good and anything that is too colorful equals bad, so animal characters receive the boot and only now devs are breaking from this mentality.
And yes Nintendo, in general, isn't focus on making their characters well have a character so the player can connect easier to them, what for me is a terrible formula and needs to die in a ditch, like sadly I think DK and his gang are the only ones that have some sort of character and is super small, and the villains they can go all off because the player is not trying to connect to them so they can be anything. But is not just Nintendo that does it have a reason why exist so many mute characters that are just moved by the plot and have no say on anything, gaming world have too many passive characters...
Oh... I kinda like apes so I like to see them being represented somewhat xDD
Yes, Tropical Freeze has Rambi and only Rambi as a playable, sadly I think the devs didn't even see to take a quick look to DKC2 or 3 on making Tropical Freeze, so most of the animal buddies don't even appear as cameos :/
Pokemon is fascinating in this part for like how they focus on the animation and to make less complex designs so when they go to the anime they can move and do complex poses in the battles without needing to sacrifice an animator, and the most important is easier for kids to draw them thanks to that what makes easier to create new fans, but again I really dislike complex designs so gen 1 and 4 for me are the worse ^^"
For me they hit gold in gen 3 and 5 on the design department, but well gen 5 is like gen 1 2.0...
