As far as I know the books of dead were mostly writting in hieroglyphs as well, especially in the older kingdoms and demotic was established later. My jackals are from the second intermediate period and I found this book of the dead from the same time. It looks like cursive hieroglyphs to me, but maybe you can explain to me?

As Areku is the eldest son of Eren and the heir to the Nomarch's throne, it can be explained that this piece is of such a high importance that it was written in hieroglyphs. I can also imagine now a scene of Areku writing a scroll in hieroglyphs and complaining to his father, asking if this letter is so important that he can't use Hieratic for it.
