I watched him settle upon the silo ruins. There was no sound but the wind for nearly an hour.

With a solid kick, he was knocked headlong into the dry well, unable to stop his descent as he plummeted into the miry pit. Clamboring to his feet, he tried in vain to scramble back up...his strength sapped from the fighting, he could do little but watch helplessly as his feathered compatriot battled on in his stead. Clutching his spear close to his chest, he cringed as the bird, closer than a brother in the way only way can bring two individual souls together, was eventually knocked out of the sky by a barrage of bow-fire, his now lifeless body spiraling to the ground and out of his line of vision. Ears falling back in sadness, his tears only just began to well in his eyes as he looked up once more to the sky, watching a single white feather gracefully fall down to meet him where he sat.

"I'll avenge you, my friend...and one day, we shall meet at the end of it all..."

...heh. creativity get.

And lo, for as he thought his quest a failure, his goal beyond reach, there it appeared to him.

In a light, shining from the heavens, floated the legendary 498'th feather of the holy Goosey Gander. At last his deliverance had come, and he may return home no longer an outcast but a hero! With this, the last of the 1000 feathers of Goosey Gander, his pillow would be properly stuffed once more, and he should sleep as no cat has slept before!

... a prelude to this one perhaps?
