Under the moon and star lit sky, the wolf king's castle sat alone atop a large hill protruding from the earth. The huge structure's stone walls appeared almost black in the limited brightness of the moonlight, with yellow and orange glows showing from within many of the windows. Around the grounds, a small number of dragons patrolled the perimiter and guarded the few entrances, with a few watchmen atop the towers, armed with large bows. Lyle saw them well with his nightwolf eyes cutting through both the darkness of the night, and the fog that was forming in the air around the castle. From a small, dense patch of bushes not much more than a mile from the castle's outer walls, the nightwolf and his companion waited, ignoring the increasing cold in the midnight air. Or, at least, Lyle could ignore it.
"Lyle? Can we hurry up and get inside now? I'm getting cold..." Scale complained, hugging his staff as if the object would somehow warm him.
"Soon, buddy. Just wait until I check the map routes once more before we go..." the nightwolf responded, patiently studying the castle map. Once they were inside, it would probably be some time before they would arrive at the top, where the king's chamber stood. "So, once we're in...", Lyle said, "you can't make us bigger again until we've found the crown. With all the dragons inside... it's best if we don't take any chances. Once we have it, well..."
"...We can sneak out the way we came in without disturbing anything else?" Scale suggested innocently.
Lyle smiled. "We'll see. Now... We can't exactly walk in through the front door, here. Not at this size, anyway... But, going by the map, there's an easy way in, over there..."
The nightwolf directed Scale's attention past the large front gates, toward the western side of the castle. Small windows, at the very base of the wall, far too small for anyone to fit through. They hummed with an almost dull orange light, likely supplied by a small number of candles or wall lanterns.
"The castle's dungeon is beneth the western wall. Those are the cell windows..." Lyle said.
"Ah, okay. You think, we should sneak in through the dungeon?" The dragon asked, visibly hesitant.
"It might take a little longer to work our way to the top, sure... but, I'm betting on finding a quicker solution, somewhere inside... Just, do your thing. A foot should be fine- The sentries shouldn't notice us, and any smaller, it would take us longer to reach the wall..."
Scale nodded in agreement. Channeling the staff's magic, he rapidly reduced himself and his companion in size, to around the twelve inch mark- a little less, in his case.
The ensuing approach to the castle led the pair through a field of grass- each blade reaching above their knees, slowing them more than they would have liked- but their smaller shapes made them invisible to the watchful guards atop the walls. At most, they would have seemed a pair of small, wild animals, rustling through the fields in search of a nighttime snack. Eventually, the wolf and dragon made it to the base of the wall- collossal, from their perspective. Each brick, a large, immovable stone, stacked together with countless others to form the mighty walls of the structure. The dungeon windows, were merely rectangular holes cut into the bricks, at ground level, featureless save for a dividing steel bar in the center of every window. Each was barely more than a foot wide, and half as high. Lyle knelt at the edge of the window and looked in.
"Alright... We can slip in this way. Two inches should do it", he told the gray dragon.
Scale quickly complied, drawing on his staff's power to shrink Lyle and himself further down, leaving the wolf two inches tall as per his suggestion, and himself, slightly smaller.
Entering through the cell window, the pair immediately felt the shift in temperature. The inside of the dungeon was warm, and in the air, hung a scent of smoke, and... dragon. Looking down over the window ledge, Lyle saw the source of the latter; On a hard stone bed, lay a sleeping drakespire warrior. The dragon was large- not just in the shrunken nightwolf's eyes, being around seven feet in height, and rather portly, unlike most drakespire dragons. Their kind, courtesy of their biology, were typically resistant to gaining much excess body fat. The snoozing warrior's green scales shone red and brown from the burning lamps that lit the room, which was less spacious than the nightwolf had expected. There were four cells, seperated by rows of thick metal bars with barely a few inches between them. Two cells were to the left of the blubbery dragon's, and one on the far right of the room. Each of the other cells were empty, the only other occupant of the room being a small, purple dragon sitting at a heavy wooden desk.
"Are you ready?" Lyle asked the gray dragon, with a smile.
"Ready? What fo- Aah!?!"
Scale yelped in confusion as Lyle grabbed his hand and jumped off the ledge, dragging his companion with him. The wolf and dragon fell a few feet through the air, and landed softly on the sleeping dragon's massive belly, with the touch of their light forms not disturbing the titan's rest at all, even with them bouncing a little as they landed.
"He's a heavy sleeper", Lyle said, helping Scale to his feet. "I wonder why they locked him up?"
"I dunno. Desertion?"
The green dragon's mouth opened as he snored peacefully, the tiny voices being beneath his notice entirely.
"Hm, maybe. If that's right, he probably won't be around after dawn", Lyle said, scratching his ear. "A waste of a perfectly good dragon, don't you think?"
"Um..." Scale nervously looked at the floor that was the big dragon's belly, "If you want to take him with us, we should wait until after we've got the crown. If this guy vanishes from inside his cell all of a sudden it might complicate things".
"Yeah", Lyle relented, "They would know something is up. It's not like he's gonna be squeezing through the bars anytime soon. We'll come back this way and shrink him down after we get what we came for".
Scale followed the little nightwolf as he walked down the drakespire warrior's body, jumping off the soft buldge in the pudgy dragon's shorts and landing on his tail, which they walked along and slid down where it hung over the bottom of the stone bed.
"Now, Scale... We just need to figure out an easy way to the top of the castle..."
That's all for now. Comment, if you want~
