Bandwagon? Meme? I guess missed something there...
While everyone is drawing Na'vi, the movie makes me feel nostalgic. As mentioned in a previous journal entry, from the first trailer on it reminded me a lot of an old PC game called ALBION, which did feature a similiar setting.
Basically while being on a little field trip to gather data, you crash land on a planet that's supposed to have the worst living conditions ever... just to find out it's a lush, jungle-like environment. You end up being nursed back to health by the local natives, a cat like race called the Iskai.
Iskai are quite some like Na'vi.
They do have a similiar tall and lanky build, tho they faces and legs/feet are more animal like. The tail is longer and prehensile (in game terms that means there's an extra weapon slot). Also, the Iskai ladies have two pairs of boobs, hence this guy having four nipples as well.
They come in various shades of grey and brown while the hair color ranges from light blonde over red to dark brown.
Iskai don't have a home tree, yet their buildings are living plant matter, as are much of the facilities and furniture inside. They don't think that much of clothing, most are running around not wearing anything at all. Given the warm climate it doesn't really seem off to go with nothing or "skimpy" at the best.
Right over the bridge of their noses they have an organ called "trii" which is kinda like those nerve endings at the end of a Na'vi braid. They can see/sense each other with it.
This guy here his a youngster, grown up males tend to have fuzzy cheeks a la Wolverine and a rather impressive mane. I did my best to draw him correct, since Vista doesn't run old DOS games and there's barely any usable reference image over the net, I'm drawing these guys from memory. And mind you, that game's from 1995, so it's been a while.
Going to move the lineart to scraps once I'm done coloring.

Yeah, from the moment I first heard the story of Avatar I was like "Hey - that's Albion made into a Movie!" - The whole situation is very similar, greedy corporation comes to mine planet for profit, tries to hide evidence of intelligent life (namely, cat-like humanoids living in harmony with the planet). Heck, both planets are sort of alive, though Albion is rather a magical kingdom.
Glad to see some iskai art. Albion was the first RPG I played, and still remains high on my favourites list. Thumbs up!
