I just figured it's a matter of pure economics. They've spent all that effort just to be driven off. Know what happens when you sulk back to your stockholders with a net loss? They tell you not to do it again. Depending on how expensive that equipment and the travel is, it might not be worth returning for any reason. Smart investors don't throw good money after bad.
(Then again, if we were dealing with smart folks in the first place, they wouldn't have let themselves get to the point that they were relying on unobtanium.)
