An idea I had specifically for Edwin, a country on the furry RP forum World of Feila.
Edwin, in Mediaeval times is supposed to be the most powerful kingdom, although rivalled by Gawain. There's been several of mentions so far of the Edwinish Royal Navy during this time. The Navy assisted in the war between mammals and reptiles, it chased after some of the most elusive Mediaeval pirates ever seen and it provides a handy plot device if you're searching for sea monsters. Only recently I read that 3 ships of the Royal Navy were sunk by sea-snakes, or something along those lines. The Navy also features in other ages, such as our 18th and 19th century settings, in which ships of the line and ironclad steamers are added to the Service's might respectively.
However, in terms of the Mediaeval period, nobody has actually given a definitive illustration of what the trademark ship of Edwin, the Great Shyppe, actually looks like. I know personally I described it as having a high forecastle and an ornate stern, and armed with ballista, but otherwise the appearance of Edwinish Navy vessels is somehwat vague in these times.
So, this is my interpretation of what an Edwinish Great Shyppe of the Royal Navy looks like. It is partially based on the Tudor warship the Great Harry, and the British warship HMS Victory, and partially just made up. I know in real Mediaeval times no ship ever got this powerful, but we're in a fantasy setting, I can do what I like. :D
It is armed with 120 direct fire ballistae firing bolts which may be set alight. It also is carrying 14 indirect fire catapults that fire containers of burning pitch, bringing its total amrament to 134 pieces of artillery. It is crewed by approximately 1000 men, not including up to 200 soldiers, which may add to the vessel's firepower by means of bows and arrows, spears and assisting in boarding other vessels.
These are the largest ships in the Edwinish Fleet, and usually serve in battle fleets at war. They can also serve as flagships. And yes, that is a six-storey stern, each storey a great cabin for the most senior officers on board. :D
